Reading News-More Fantasy Fiction!
Hi! I hope you had a good weekend! Over the Last two weeks we have been reading a story called Arthur’s Reading Race and focusing on character traits. This week we are continuing with lesson two from our Storytown reading program by reading another fictional story called Frog and Toad All Year. Make sure you ask your child to tell you about our story of the week after we read it tomorrow. This week we will also be taking two, I-Ready assessment tests for reading and math on our classroom Chrome books. This data will be used in helping guide your child during our reading and math practice times.
Math Learning- Topic 2- Understanding Addition Strategies!
This week we are continuing our district adopted Envision math program. Last week we finished topic 1 which focused on understanding basic addition and subtraction concepts. On Monday, your child brought home practice pages that we completed last week as we completed topic 1.
On Monday we also began topic two which focuses on understanding addition/subtraction strategies. The topic 2 parent note was sent home describing some of the concepts we will be covering. Suggestions are given on these topic notes so please make sure you look at these practice activities as there are homework extensions/ideas listed as well as a fun game to play with your child. Please look at the math vocabulary shown below so that you can better help your child understand basic, addition strategies. Thanks for your math support!
Writing News-Descriptive Sentences and Paragraphs!
This week we are continuing our Storytown writing unit on creating complete sentences and using them in a small, descriptive paragraph. During the week, we will be working through the planning process, organizing our ideas and even creating a rough and final draft of a descriptive paragraph. Each student will be encouraged to stay on topic and add specific details about the subject like what it looks, sounds, feels, tastes and smells like. Remember, encourage your child to practice using their newly learned writing concepts (sentences and descriptive paragraphs) while writing at home.
Spelling News-More Short Vowels-O and E!
Today your child took a pre-test on our weekly, Storytown words. This pretest is being sent home today to use as a resource for spelling practice. Encourage your child to keep practicing their words so that they are ready for our Friday test. They can do this by writing them in complete sentences which is something we have been doing during our practice times. Thanks for your spelling support!

Walking Field Trip!
On this Thursday, we are going on a walking field trip around Yacolt from 1:00-3:00 PM. Two weeks ago a field trip permission slip was sent home for a walking field this Thursday, September 21st. During this field trip, we will be learning about the town of Yacolt as we do a walking tour and then we will be going to City Hall. Most students have returned their permission slip, but some have not. Please make sure your child has returned their form so they can go with us. Thanks to those parents who would like to be chaperones for our trip. A student and chaperone note will be coming home on Wednesday with reminder information on it about times and chaperone responsibilities. Thanks!
Thanks and have a great week!
