Reading News-Fantasy Fiction!
Hi! I hope you had a good weekend! Last week we read some nonfiction text using our Scholastic News articles and focused on nonfiction, text conventions such as photographs, captions, headings, subheadings and bold print. We read about different types of communities, how to be a good citizen and a family that has two Veterans. These articles are came home on Monday with your child so have them read the articles to you and share details about what it was mostly about. Thanks for your reading help!!!
This week we are reading a story- Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type (a fantasy fictional story) and learning more specific concepts about story plot. It should be a fun week as we read this funny, fictional story and review important reading, spelling, phonics and writing concepts while finishing our second theme book.
Understanding Place Value!
This week we are continuing our district adopted Envision math program. Today, your child began to learning about place value from topic five. Topic five focuses on strategies to help students understand the value of numbers. This week we are making base 10 models of numbers as well as reading, writing and comparing numbers to 120 to help us better understand greater than, less than and equal to. We will also be counting to 120 and looking at these numbers and discussing what comes before or after when doing ordering activities. Your child also is bringing home today the topic, introduction page explaining more details about our place value unit.
This week students are continuing to learn more grammar concepts to help us when we read and write. Last week we focused on proper nouns by using and identifying them in sentences. This week we are going to focus on singular and plural nouns to so we better understand how these different noun forms are used in sentences. We are also going to focus on collective nouns which are specific names for a group of nouns. Remember to encourage your child to share their grammar knowledge at home either verbally or on paper in sentences within their narrative writing samples if they have a chance! Spelling News-oa and ow Sounds!
Today, your child took a pre-test on practice words from Storytown lesson 9. This test is coming home copied onto the homework practice/recording page. Once again, today’s words came home so make sure your child practices using the spelling ideas presented on the page. Thanks for your spelling support.

Science-Solids in Liquids!
Last week be continued our science by sorting a solid soup mix. We explored with types of solids in our mix as we saw how they are different sized as we used our metal filters to separate these solids by size. This week we are going to see how some solids turn or dissolve into liquids using toothpaste and food coloring. Ask your child about our fun science learning times today!
